Osteopathic medicine is a philosophy and practice of medical care by a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) trained in the United States. It is distinct from an allopathic degree (MD) but similar in education and training. Osteopathic physicians tend to have a whole-person approach rather than just looking at the most visible problem and treating a symptom. They look at a person’s overall wellness, their environment, and their resources when considering treatment.

Osteopathic physicians partner with patients for better outcomes and better patient satisfaction. You know yourself better than anyone else. DOs believe there is a connection between the body, mind, and spirit. This connection plays a key role in delivering optimal healthcare. Instead of sitting behind a clipboard or computer screen, osteopathic physicians use their hands to diagnose and treat many illnesses or injuries, which many patients find comforting and healing. Focus on prevention and maintenance of wellness is central to our philosophy. Osteopathic physicians believe the body’s natural tendency toward health and self-healing is innate. Our task is to remove anything blocking the body’s ability to heal and self-regulate.

Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) embodies the core philosophy and practice of traditional osteopathy in a contemporary, result-oriented, evidence-based fashion. OMT uses hands-on diagnosis and treatment with a focus on ensuring the patient is free from restriction so their native health can be restored. Health and happiness are who we are, sometimes we just need a little help to make ourselves whole again.
